I had a sudden urge for a pair of red socks, so I made it happen! I used the Ruby Thursday Wollmeise I had leftover from Margot, and a stitch pattern I’ve used before and really liked.

One week from brain to feet!

Bright red hand-knitted socks on sock blockers. There’s a bold diamond cable down the middle of both feet, with a micture of textures. They look very cosy.

I did a lot of the knitting while reading the Iliad and drinking red wine, because I’m just like that. Looking back on them, I should have called them something more like ‘wine-dark socks’ or something a little more epithetic. Ah well.

A part-knitted pair of socks on circular needles, with their respective balls of yarn behind them. Behind that to the left, a pattern book showing the cable design being worked on. Back right, an English translation of the Iliad. And at the front right, a frosted tumbler with chicks on the outside and wine on the inside.

Last year I bought a couple of books by Named Clothing as a birthday present to myself. The basic premise of both books is giving you a base design and then different elements to switch in and out as you see fit; sort of a mid-way point between carefully following a pattern to the letter and self-drafting....
